Day 1: Balmaceda – Coyhaique

At the airport in Balmaceda you receive your rental car. Your first destination is Coyhaique, the capital of the Aysen region. You can explore the beautiful city with its pentagonal city square and do some supply shopping for the upcoming days. If you want to dive directly into nature, you may visit the Rio Simpson national reserve.

Day 2: Coyhaique – Puerto Guadal

As you have a very long, but beautiful drive ahead of you, we recommend to start early in the morning. On the biggest lake in Chile you have the chance to do a boat trip close to Puerto Tranquilo in order to visit the “Capillas de Mármol”. These “marble chapels” are extraordinary rock formations made from bright marble that reflect in the water of the lake and create a breath taking play of colors.

Day 3: Puerto Guadal – Lago General Carrera

This day is at your disposal for exploring the surroundings of Lake General Carrera. An excursion to the Patagonia Park is highly recommended. On the way you can see the conflux of the Baker and Neff rivers which makes a beautiful scene. In the park itself you can explore by car or by hiking on many different trails. Here you can enjoy the contrast of landscapes and spot many different animal species.

Day 4: Puerto Guadal – Perito Moreno

After breakfast you drive east to the border town of Chile Chico. You then continue your trip through Argentina where the landscape changes notably. The climate gets very dry in this comparably short distance, notably warmer, extremely windy, and the landscape looks more and more like a grassland. You spend the night in the small town of Perito Moreno.

Day 5: Perito Moreno – Gobernador Gregores

Today you reach the legendary Route 40, which will bring you further south through endless grassland landscapes. You will spend the night in Gobernador Gregores so that the way to El Chalten on the next day won´t be too long. This town is also the starting point if you wish to visit the Perito Moreno National Park, which is difficult to access.

Day 6: Gobernador Gregores – El Chaltén

Today’s drive leads you farther West, close to the Chilean border. You will drive past the heart-shaped Lake Cardiel and along the Lake Lago Viedma, which shimmers turquoise-blue due to the glacier water, all the way to the town El Chaltén which lies at the foot of the famous Fitz Roy ridge. Weather permitting, you will have a fantastic view of it!

Day 7: El Chalten

This day is to spend as you please. The surroundings of El Chaltén invite you to follow long and well-marked hiking trails. For example, you can do a fantastic 8 hour trekking tour to the foot of Fitz Roy and the Laguna de los Tres.

Day 8: El Chaltén – El Calafate

If you wish, you can do another short hike in the morning before leaving for El Calafate which you will reach after 3.5 hours of driving. This small tourist town is located right next to the giant glacier lake Lago Argentino and is the ideal starting point for visiting the famous Perito Moreno Glacier.

Day 9: El Calafate – Perito Moreno

Today we recommend a full day excursion to the Perito Moreno Glacier in the southern part of the Glaciares National Park. The glacier is not only incredibly beautiful but is also one of the few glaciers that is still growing in the Andes Mountains. Afterwards you can go on a one hour boat trip from the southern bank of Lake Argentino in order to get to the glacier wall of Perito Moreno.

Day 10: El Calafate – Torres del Paine

On today´s drive, you leave Argentina again in order to get to the next highlight of the tour – the Torres del Paine National Park. On the way, you drive through wide pampa landscapes crossing the Chilean border until reaching the foot of the Torres del Paine ridge. Even from far away, you can already enjoy the impressive view of it.

Day 11: Torres del Paine

It is recommended to start the day early so that you have enough time to explore the National Park with a hike. The park is a paradise for all trekking fans and offers a large variety of trails. With good climate conditions, a breath taking, but exhausting, hike to the viewpoint Base de las Torres is recommended. Your effort is rewarded with a fantastic view of the three rock peaks of the Torres del Paine which loom into the sky over the picturesque lagoon.

Day 12: Torres del Paine

You have one more day available to explore this incredible National Park. You can go on another hike or learn more about the flora and fauna of the region. As an alternative, you can also explore a part of the National Park by car by driving along Lake Nordenskjöld to Guardería Pudeto. There you can take a boat trip on Lake Pahoé or just stop along the way at the different viewpoints and take a little walk to the Salto Grande.

Day 13: Torres del Paine – Punta Arenas
